🚨 Breaking!UK marine protected areas are being bulldozed by bottom trawling, a highly destructive, government sanctioned method of fishing.Research from our client Oceana UK analysed satellite tracks from Global Fishing Watch to determine that just 10 fishing vessels carry out one-quarter of all suspected bottom trawling in UK offshore marine ‘protected’ areas.Over 33,000 hours of suspected bottom trawling took place in offshore marine protected areas in 2023 alone - that's nearly four years' worth.Ancient coral gardens, delicate seagrass meadows, beautiful seafloor fish–bottom trawling destroys it all, indiscriminately. It is damaging and unsustainable, both to marine ecosystems and the climate.Join us in supporting Oceana UK call on the government to ban bottom trawlingin protected areas. Comedians as campaigners? 😆 With devastating news about climate change and nature degradation, it can be hard for those working in the environment sector to stay positive and uplifting in their messaging.Comedy can be an effective tool to cut through the despair and communicate complex issues in a more accessible way. With Comic Relief #RedNoseDay taking place today, we've chosen a few of our favourite examples of comedians taking on challenging social and environmental campaigns! 👇 ☀ The Climate Science Translated campaign by Climate Science Breakthrough, which brings together scientists and comedians such as Nish Kumar and Jo Brand to simplify public messaging on climate change.🐶 Will Young's fight to ban the use of dogs for testing and research purposes in the UK.🌊 Paul Whitehouse’s informative ‘Our Troubled Rivers’ BBC Studios documentary and Joe Lycett's work on ‘Lycett vs Sewage’ on Channel 4.🍎 Comedian couple Lucy Beaumont and Jon Richardson's support for relieving child hunger across the UK and promoting healthy eating for Magic Breakfast. What's been your favourite? The UK has a big problem with waste and particularly plastic pollution. So what is the Government doing about it?Seahorse is working with Reloop to highlight the urgent need for a Deposit Return Scheme to tackle this crisis🗑️🚩At the last election, the Government committed to introducing a DRS, to help put a stop to the 1 million bottles each day which go unrecycled.⌛But progress has been slow and all the while plastic has been piling up🚯That’s why this week a coalition of drinks producers, retailers and other environmental groups have called on Government to not let its manifesto commitment to introduce a deposit return scheme float away and deliver it by the end of this parliament.Read more about the letter to Defra here 👇 https://lnkd.in/e5GU8Hd6
